This epilator work great. It does a super job. No pain. But it is quite noisy. In fact the motor is loud.

I think the other reviews have mostly covered the epilation side of this, but: It really isn't as scary as it seems. I'd heard from a few people who'd previously tried epilating that it's excruciatingly painful, they all gave up on it almost immediately after they bought it, &c. And i'm not great with pain myself, so i was nervous.
But it's not that bad. It does hurt, i can't deny that, but it's tolerable. The best way i can describe the sensation is this: When i was younger i would steal my father's electric shaver to use on my legs, and since i didn't know how to use it very well i would push it too hard into my skin in an effort to shave closer. I pushed it so hard that i could feel the blades on the other side of the grill nipping at my skin. That's what epilating feels like.
I do have a few pain-management tips if you find that it's too much:
1. Take some ibuprofen or naproxen 15 minutes before starting.
2. Stretch your skin taut, as far as it will go (don't hurt yourself obviously). This is especially helpful around the calves.
3. (And this is the most important one!) Don't be delicate! You will probably feel the urge to take quick little nips and then pull the epilator away -- don't do this, it just makes it hurt more (plus it takes longer). It seems counter-intuitive, but keep it in contact with your skin the whole time. Do one little spot at a time, in tiny circular or back-and-forth motions, and when it's completely finished move slowly to the next spot.
OK, aside from the actual act of epilating:
- The epilator feels fine in your hand. It seemed bigger in the picture to me than it really was, so if it looks really chunky to you too, don't worry.
- It hasn't got a battery, it will only run off the mains. The cable it comes with is probably long enough for most people, but if you're like me and your tub is on the opposite side of the bath room from the wall socket (and you don't want to get hair all over your floor), you might need a short extension cord.
- Contrary to the other reviews, i have found the shaver attachment to be extremely poor. I am not a regular user of electric shavers, but i have tried a couple over the years, so i feel i have a basis for comparison. This one is just awful to the point of being useless. It will trim the hairs, eventually, so they're short enough to epilate, but it will take AGES (it'd probably be faster to use cuticle scissors...). It will NOT get close enough to do the job of a normal shaver.
So if you're thinking to yourself (as i was), 'oh hey, this is a sure thing, even if i don't like the epilator i'll still have a perfectly good shaver!', you should probably rethink it. It's fine if you just want the epilator, but don't factor the shaver into the equation at all, because it's worthless.
As painful as the old school Epiladies, 2010-03-01
I have a lot of hair. Always have. I look for new better ways to get rid of said hair reguarly. A few years ago, I purchased an excellent well-reviewed epilator machine that worked like a charm until it finally died on me. I replaced it with this Braun epilator, and wow. I had not felt that kind of pain since using the original models of the Epilady about 20 years ago. I don't know what it is about it, but every rotation, ever hair grabbed, is too much pain that one should be having with such a machine. Also, the cord is just too short. I don't know how to return it, but wish I could. It just lays there now, collecting dust. I'll be looking for and replacing with the original if I can, with its completely reasonable pain level and option to go cord-less.
I love this product, 2010-03-03
When I first got the epilator I was very scared to use it. I tried it out and for the very first use it felt like I was being zap by electricity. I then took out the razor attachment that comes with this epilator, shaved my legs and tried again. Once the hair on my legs was relatively short there was very minimal pain. I epilate now evert 2-3 weeks with little pain. I find this product to be one of the best investments that I have made. I have not yet tried it any where else on my body but I also don't mind shaving other areas that are more tender everyday (especially my arm pits). I would recommend this product to a friend and I think if you are tired of shaving every other day like I was, then this product is for you.
just OK, 2010-03-02
I've been using this epilator for a few months and I can't say it is anything special. I only use it for my legs, and the hair grows back in 2 to 3 days, not 2 to 3 weeks. Prior to this, I used an Epilady coil epilator for several years (it finally wore out) and it did a better job, with about 2 weeks between uses. Maybe the Braun breaks most of the hairs instead of getting it down to the root. I don't know, but for my dark hair the Braun doen't work very well.
