Robert Clampett

They Died With Their Boots On

  Rated: NR (Not Rated)
Staring: Errol Flynn, Olivia de Havilland, William T. Orr, John Litel, Eleanor Parker
Director: B. Reeves Eason, Raoul Walsh, Robert Clampett
Bert Glennon, who shot Stagecoach and seven other John Ford classics, has given this Raoul Walsh biopic of George Armstrong Custer a burnished glow--an evocative interplay of raw sunlight and elegiac shadow like no other vintage Warner Bros. Western. Glennon's artistry and Walsh's trademark gusto sustain enthusiasm even as the screenplay beggars belief. The flamboyant Custer (Errol Flynn), rushed into Civil War service straight from West Point, did get promoted overnight to general and establish a spectacular record for "ride to the guns" leadership. However, Custer as defender of Indians' rights--to the point of willing his own Last Stand so he could accuse corrup...

The Dawn Patrol

  Rated: NR (Not Rated)
Staring: Errol Flynn, Basil Rathbone, Hal Le Roy, Eddie Foy Jr., June Allyson
Director: Bobby Connolly, Edmund Goulding, Robert Clampett, Roy Mack
The Dawn Patrol is a beautiful title for two very good movies Warner Bros. made eight years apart, in 1930 and 1938. Both tell the same World War I story (which won a 1930 Academy Award for John Monk Saunders), about a succession of flight commanders at a British air base in France. Each officer in turn has to keep sending pilots out on dangerous, often insane missions in flimsy, patched-up planes, then pray that even half get back alive. The job is soul-killing for the commandants and deadly for their comrades and friends. Make that former friends.

It's the later, Errol Flynn version of The Dawn Patrol that's won DVD release. The original is rarely sho...

To Have and Have Not (Snap Case)

  Rated: NR (Not Rated)
Staring: Humphrey Bogart, Lauren Bacall, Mel Blanc, Walter Brennan, Dolores Moran
Director: Arthur Davis, Howard Hawks, Robert Clampett
Yes, it's true: you can virtually see Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall falling for each other in this Howard Hawks variation on Casablanca but adapted from--as legend has it--Ernest Hemingway's self-declared "worst novel." (The story goes that Hawks told Hemingway he could make a movie of the author's least work, and Hemingway gave him the rights to this story.) The script by William Faulkner and Jules Furthman actually makes this one of Hawks's and Bogart's most interesting and often exciting films. Bogart plays a boat captain who reluctantly agrees to help the French Resistance while wooing chanteuse Bacall. Hoagy Carmichael, wry at the piano, adds a delicious a...

Looney Tunes: Golden Collection, Vol. 4

  Rated: Unrated
Staring: Mel Blanc, Arthur Q. Bryan, Orson Welles, Stan Freberg, Dave Barry
Director: Arthur Davis, Chuck Jones, Constantine Nasr, Frank Tashlin, Friz Freleng
Like previous installments, the Looney Tunes Golden Collection, Volume 4 mixes favorites from the Warner Bros. archives with relatively obscure older works. Chuck Jones' "Mississippi Hare" and Friz Freleng's "Sahara Hare" and "Knighty-Knight Bugs" (which won an Oscar) offer hilarious performances by Bugs. Two of Jones' earliest films, "The Night Watchman" and "Conrad the Sailor" prefigure his use of subtle expressions in his later cartoons. The disc of shorts by Frank Tashlin includes "Plane Daffy": pigeon see-duck-tress Hatta Mari anticipates Jayne Mansfield in such later Tashlin live-action comedies as Will Success Spoil Rock Hunter?

Not all of these f...

Dr. Seuss' Horton Hears a Who (Deluxe Edition)

  Rated: NR (Not Rated)
Staring: Hans Conried, June Foray, Chuck Jones, Thurl Ravenscroft, Sara Berner
Director: Chuck Jones, Ben Washam, Ralph Bakshi, Robert Clampett, Tony Collingwood
Chuck Jones was chief animator on this lively adaptation of the famous book by Dr. Seuss. The story of a friendly elephant named Horton who discovers--deep inside a daisy--a tiny city called Whoville with tiny, intelligent residents--this film (fleshed out a bit from the source) is strong on character and has striking, appealing visuals. The little folks of Whoville, with their natural air of aristocracy, are a kick, and when they come to see Horton as a hero for his democratic view of all life big and small, the effect is quite touching. This should be a real treat for kids already familiar with the book, but just might inspire those who haven't read it to pick it up.

Looney Tunes: Golden Collection, Vol. 6

  Rated: NR (Not Rated)
Staring: Mel Blanc, Arthur Q. Bryan, Bea Benaderet, Stan Freberg, John T. Smith
Director: Alex Lovy, Chuck Jones, Friz Freleng, Hugh Harman, Jack King
Fifteen cartoons dating from World War II give Volume 6 of the Looney Tunes Golden Collection more focus than previous sets. Many of the 1940's cartoons remain very funny. Bugs Bunny dresses up as Brunnhilda and rides in to the strains of "Tannhauser" in "Herr Meets Hare" (1945), a gag Chuck Jones re-used to greater effect in "What's Opera, Doc" a dozen years later. In "Russian Rhapsody" (1940) some of the gremlins who sabotage Hitler's bomber are caricatures of the Warner Bros. artists. Chuck Jones appears as a chunky, pinkish-tan homunculus swinging a mallet; Friz Freleng is a little green man with a saw-like nose. Younger viewers may find the referenc...

Looney Tunes Super Stars: Daffy Duck Frustrated Fowl

  Rated: NR (Not Rated)
Staring: Mel Blanc, Arthur Q. Bryan, Sara Berner, Robert C. Bruce, June Foray
Director: Chuck Jones, Frank Tashlin, Friz Freleng, Maurice Noble, Phil Monroe
Daffy Duck: Frustrated Fowl was released in conjunction with Bugs Bunny: Hare Extraordinaire, so it's not surprising the two collections share the same strengths and weaknesses. None of these shorts have been released on disc before, and Chuck Jones's "Daffy Dilly" (1948) is a welcome addition to any cartoon library. Daffy sets out to win the money a gloomy millionaire is offering to anyone who can make him laugh--and succeeds in spite of himself. But many of these cartoons are, simply, duds. "This Is a Life?" (1955), "People Are Bunny" (1959), and "Person to Bunny" (1960) spoof largely forgotten TV shows. How many viewers under 65 will recognize caricatures...
