This brief feature (only 62 minutes) mixes characters and situations borrowed from various shorts that Tex Avery, William Hanna, and Joseph Barbera made at MGM during the 1940s and early '50s. Yet director James Tim Walker lacks the razor-sharp timing of his models. When a young wizard leaves Tom to guard his magic ring, and Jerry gets the ring stuck on his head, a long series of chases and slapstick confrontations ensue. Fifteen cartoons dating from World War II give Volume 6 of the Looney Tunes Golden Collection more focus than previous sets. Many of the 1940's cartoons remain very funny. Bugs Bunny dresses up as Brunnhilda and rides in to the strains of "Tannhauser" in "Herr Meets Hare" (1945), a gag Chuck Jones re-used to greater effect in "What's Opera, Doc" a dozen years later. In "Russian Rhapsody" (1940) some of the gremlins who sabotage Hitler's bomber are caricatures of the Warner Bros. artists. Daffy Duck: Frustrated Fowl was released in conjunction with Bugs Bunny: Hare Extraordinaire, so it's not surprising the two collections share the same strengths and weaknesses. None of these shorts have been released on disc before, and Chuck Jones's "Daffy Dilly" (1948) is a welcome addition to any cartoon library. Daffy sets out to win the money a gloomy millionaire is offering to anyone who can make him laugh--and succeeds in spite of himself. But many of these cartoons are, simply, duds. "This Is a Life?" (1955), "People Are Bunny" (1959), and "Person to Bunny" (1960) spoof largely forgotten TV shows. How many viewers under 65 will recognize caricatures...
