Director: Bethany Rooney, David Jackson, Gregory Prange, Janice Cooke, John Mallory Asher
One Tree Hill: The Complete Fourth Season finds the dramatic final year of high school for the series' major characters full of grudges, pregnancies, partner-switching, big mistakes, and dashed hopes. But there are also renewals of friendship and new possibilities in love and independence. The season is overshadowed by the murder of Keith Scott (Craig Sheffer), uncle to brothers Lucas and Nathan Scott, neither of whom realizes that the killer was their own father, Dan (Paul Johansson), Keith's brother. While Dan is haunted by his conscience over his misdeed, Nathan himself feels Keith's ghostly presence during a season-opening crisis in which he dives into a lake t...

Calamity Jane

  Rated: NR (Not Rated)
Staring: Doris Day, Howard Keel, Allyn Ann McLerie, Philip Carey, Dick Wesson
Director: David Butler
This 1953 musical is very much a vehicle for Doris Day, in the title role, as a wild cowgal who can outshoot and outsing any boy on the range. When an actress arrives in Deadwood and uses her feminine charms on Jane's secret love, Wild Bill Hickock (Howard Keel), Jane tries to mend her tomboy ways. Not exactly up to the feminist code of honor, this is still energetic and Day is very perky. Of course, one could almost detect a homosexual undercurrent with the cross-dressing Jane, but this was Hollywood in the 1950s, so we best not. This won an Oscar for Best Song--"Secret Love," by Sammy Fain and Paul Francis Webster. --Rochelle O'Gorman

Frasier: The Complete Fifth Season

  Rated: Unrated
Staring: Kelsey Grammer, Jane Leeves, David Hyde Pierce, Peri Gilpin, Dan Butler
Director: Kelsey Grammer, Dan Butler, David Lee, Jeff Melman, Ken Levine
Frasier's fifth season is marked by two central themes. First is Roz's (Peri Gilpin) unexpected pregnancy, which naturally opens the door for countless promiscuity jokes for the radio show's beleaguered producer. The second is the continuing drama of Niles (David Hyde Pierce) and his frosty wife, Maris, which seems to finally come to a head. Not that even a good marriage has ever kept Niles from pining for Daphne (Jane Leeves), of course. Frasier's (Kelsey Grammer) show is sailing along, and for the occasion of his 1000th show, is honored by the mayor for "Frasier Crane Day," which allows the cast to do some rare location shooting in Seattle. But he has some proble...

Hill Street Blues - Season 2

  Rated: NR (Not Rated)
Staring: Daniel J. Travanti, Michael Conrad, Michael Warren, Bruce Weitz, James Sikking
Director: Arnold Laven, David Anspaugh, Georg Stanford Brown, Gregory Hoblit, Jeff Bleckner
Despite critical acclaim, Hill Street Blues could not get arrested ratings-wise its first season. Far from being careful out there, the superb second season did nothing to tinker with the integrity of this groundbreaking series to make it more audience friendly. Multiple storylines, overlapping dialogue, gritty language, and a pseudo-documentary style capture the palpable chaos and tension of what one character calls "the rat-infested, poverty-stricken urban reality." From the precinct-house shooting rampage that opens the season to a hijacked hearse in the season-ending episode, Hill Street Blues deftly walks the line between police procedural and personal ...
