Ultimate Spiderman continues to grasps what Spiderman should really be about. A teenager having to deal with his normal life, his powers, and as the saying goes all the responsibility that comes with them. Having a nice call back to the old cartoon series, this book really shows the awesome conntection between the young hot shots of the marvel ultimate world and how they interact with eachother. Funny enough, these three will all be living in the same house hold once ultimatum is over.

"The New Avengers, v.12: Powerloss"
Written by Brian Michael Bendis
Illustrated by Stuart Immonen
(Marvel Comics, 2010)
---------------------------------------------
YAY. Finally, writer Brian Michael Bendis has hit a rhythm with the New Avengers that make the book fun and fast to read. For the past several years the title has been sacrificed to the dictates of Marvel's endless string of mega-crossover events (Civil War, Secret Invasion, etc.) and the team's cast of characters has been buried under the same landslide of plot exposition and external demands. Finally we get a volume of NA where the pacing and dialogue live up to the standard set in other Bendis titles (such as Ultimate Spider-Man) and we finally see the contours of the team coming into fuller focus. I had been disappointed by the last two volumes (10 and 11) and thought the juice was totally gone. I was pleasantly surprised by the snappiness and vitality here, and I guess I'm back on board for v.13.

PS - I guess there's a move on in Marvel fandom to line up for or against The Hood. I have no problem with the character... Seems like he's in the tradition of a long line of Marvel big-bad crime bosses (Kingpin, et. al.) Indeed, Bendis' riffing on the personalities of his bad guys is one of the strongest points in this volume: the bickering and bluster between the Wrecking Crew and the others was a lot of fun. A good, strong, entertaining super-adventure... hope they can keep things up to this level! (ReadThatAgain book reviews)

From the start, Ultimate Spider-Man was the only contemporary Spider-Man worth following. The plots were beautifuly interwoven and executed, the inks perfectly in alignment with the mood of the story, everything was in the right place.

The last installment in the series, vol. 11, collects the final 11 episodes of USM and USM: Requiem 1 and 2. Although the story is a bit slower in the beginning, the finale of the series is just breathtaking. I also think that Immonen's somewhat "darker" approach to the visual material fits the events of Ultimatum much better than Bagley's would. Overall, I was not disappointed the least bit. Great read!

I really anticipated this volume cause I knew it was going to be the last one, so I wasn't let down or shocked. I'm glad that it ended the way it did even though this series was the definition of comics for me. It was time they did something for the new decade which is why I'm excited about the Ultimate Comics Spiderman that comes out July 8 (this Thursday)...it all will feel fresh again but with familiar characters and no need to go into origins. I feel like for once I'm not behind in the comic world.

As the closing bookmark for Ultimatum this story does little to really redeem anything that happened. It's a nice closing point and bridging point to the newly revamped ultimate world, but it does little to take the bad taste out of your mouth from ultimatum. Might be a nice jumping on point for anyone who missed out on the older great ultimate stories and just wants to start up with the new stuff.

I tell ya, in the normal marvel world I used to think it would be awesome to have a symbiote costume. In the ultimate world, not so much. It does give a nice "conclusion" to the symbiote issue while still leaving the door open for a return of Venom.

Review of Nextwave Ultimate Collection
Nextwave is one of those books that made me realize how many comics I've read since I started getting into them a few years ago. I first picked up Nextwave issue 2 and then went back and read issue one (I think I still have those two issues somewhere). I couldn't get into it though so I stopped. I then thought about picking up the trades when those came out but there was other stuff that I wanted to read instead. So finally I picked up this book when they released the Ultimate Collection which collects the entire series. The book is awesome. First off, I'm not the biggest fan of Warren Ellis. I don't have a good reason, except that I just couldn't get into some of the other works that I had read of his. In this book I found his writing to be quite good. He sets up all the characters wonderfully and the pacing for the story never slows. Nextwave keep dealing with one challenge after the other and it makes the book exciting. I feel that by the end, the story reaches a good conclusion but leaves it slightly open-ended so that there could be more stories told in the future.
One thing that is neat about the story is that there are a lot of references to other comics. Having read many comics, I was able to recognize the references and it made me appreciate the book more. Also Nextwave does poke fun at some ideas that occupy many other comics, such as the use of double page spreads. In the end this is a good story, that will make me check out more of Warren Ellis's other works again.
However, the real treat of this book is the art that is done by Stuart Immonen. It is simply fantastic. It's the reason I checked out Nextwave in the first place. His covers are great (Issue 2 was my favorite). The art inside is great. To me, Immonen's artwork is some of the best I've come across my entire time reading comics. It's distinct and it's detailed.
One last thing about the book is the extra content. It collects the letter pages from all the issues. I miss reading letter pages and the comics that still run them are few and far between. The book also includes all the Nextwave Primers before the start of each issue, the pitch for Nextwave, and they threw in the theme song just for good measure. One thing that I would have liked to see for the book was a proper introduction, but that isn't a big deal and it certainly doesn't diminish the overall value in anyway.
To conclude, the story is great and the artwork is fantastic. Throw in some extras and you have a great book from Marvel. Maybe they will make into an oversized hardcover someday. Hopefully they will.
