Michael Moriarty

Tailspin: Behind the Korean Airliner Tragedy (1989)

  Rated: NR (Not Rated)
Staring: Michael Murphy, Chris Sarandon, Michael Moriarty, Harris Yulin, Soon Teck-Oh
Director: David Darlow
Behind the Korean Airline Tragedy: It might have started World War III, and it nearly did. In 1983, the downing of KAL Flight 007 over Soviet air space threatened to turn the cold war hot. Was it simply a case of mistaken identity or pilot error? Was this civilian jet on a spy mission for the CIA? What was the black box never recovered? Were there military targets aboard? TAILSPIN is gripping and hard-hitting, the shocking story that two governments were afraid to tell. From the high-tech spy posts of the North Pacific to the intricate workings of the Soviet military, it's all top secret, terrifying, and true.

Pale Rider [VHS]

  Rated: R (Restricted)
Staring: Clint Eastwood, Michael Moriarty, Carrie Snodgress, Sydney Penny, Chris Penn
Director: Clint Eastwood
After a nine-year break from the genre that made him an international star (the Western just before this one was The Outlaw Josey Wales, from 1976), Clint Eastwood returned in this gritty Western, crafted in the tradition of Shane and High Noon. Eastwood directed and stars as the nameless stranger known only as "Preacher," because he rides into a beleaguered mining town wearing a clerical collar. He's either an agent of death or an angel of mercy, and the echoes of Shane ring loud and clear when he comes to the aid of independent miners who are being terrorized by a local tycoon (Richard Dysart) and his ruthless band of hired guns. Befriended ...

Casper Meets Wendy [VHS]

  Rated: PG (Parental Guidance Suggested)
Staring: Billy Burnette, Clay Crosby, Rick Dean, Hilary Duff, Bill Farmer
The creepiest thing about Casper Meets Wendy is the title characters' romance--bashful, cutie pie Casper shouldn't be prone to weaknesses of the flesh (he is, after all, a ghost). And he's entirely too childlike to take up with a witch even of Wendy's decidedly non-wicked order. Still, sparks fly in this madcap jumble of a film, and so do the sort of zippy one-liners and presto-type magic tricks that'll keep kids from 6 to 12 spellbound. The plot is paper-thin: head honcho warlock Desmond Spellman (George Hamilton) is obsessed with offing Wendy (Hilary Duff) after an oracle proclaims her powers to be on the upswing. He sends two goons to capture her at the Sunny Br...

The Last Detail [VHS]

  Rated: R (Restricted)
Staring: Jack Nicholson, Randy Quaid, Otis Young, Clifton James, Carol Kane
Director: Hal Ashby
Overshadowed by his high-profile leads in such '70s landmarks as Five Easy Pieces, Chinatown, and One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest, Jack Nicholson's remarkably complex turn in this raucous yet ultimately somber road movie also remains his most underrated. As the snarling, hedonistic, but emotionally lost Navy lifer Billy Budduskey, Nicholson teams with fellow sailor "Mule" (Otis Young) on a seemingly simple duty of escorting a naive thief (Randy Quaid) from the Norfolk naval base to the brig in Massachusetts. Though polar opposites--Mule is hard-nosed Navy, while the first image of Budduskey shows him asleep in a chair, tattered and tattooed, gripping ...

Holocaust (EP mode) [VHS]

  Rated: NR (Not Rated)
Staring: Tom Bell, Joseph Bottoms, Tovah Feldshuh, Marius Goring, Rosemary Harris
Originally a made-for-TV miniseries (that won a slew of Emmy Awards), this film follows parallel stories: those of a Jewish family in Germany from 1935 to 1945 and a German (Michael Moriarty) who rises in the Nazi ranks until he is overseeing the death camps. Genuinely haunting and truly sorrowful, this series was many people's first introduction to the impact that Hitler's Final Solution had on everyday Germans. Of course, it helps that director Marvin Chomsky had a cast that included Fritz Weaver, James Woods, Meryl Streep (who won an Emmy for her performance), and Ian Holm. Still, it is powerful storytelling in its own right. --Marshall Fine

The Stuff [VHS]

  Rated: R (Restricted)
Staring: Michael Moriarty, SCOTT BLOOM, GARRET MORRIS, PATRICK O'NEIL
Director: LARRY COHEN
B movie maverick Larry Cohen always enjoyed slipping a little social commentary into his genre pictures, and the satirical sci-fi/horror comedy The Stuff is no exception. A mix of Invasion of the Body Snatchers and The Blob, The Stuff is an insidiously addictive, low-calorie dessert sensation that soon wins the hearts and minds of the nation, but mostly the minds. You see, to borrow a title from another Cohen classic, it's alive.

Michael Moriarty is an industrial spy with questionable ethics and a certain moral flexibility behind his disarming drawl. "No one is as dumb as I appear to be," he informs his newest client, a snack food CEO ...

Hanoi Hilton [VHS]

  Rated: R (Restricted)
Staring: Michael Moriarty, Paul Le Mat, John Edwin Shaw, Ken Wright, David Soul
Director: Lionel Chetwynd
Based on interviews conducted with more than 100 former prisoners of war, The Hanoi Hilton captures the brutal and tedious life in a prison camp during the Vietnam War. Though released around the same time as Platoon and Full Metal Jacket, The Hanoi Hilton didn't have the same impact, partly because it was an independent film and couldn't afford the same production values, but also because its perspective was much narrower. This movie avoids grappling with the larger questions of the Vietnam War, instead throwing its support whole-heartedly behind the P.O.W.s and veering into jingoism as a result. (When a Cuban officer arrives to assist the Vie...
