The Harvey Girls [VHS]

  Rated: NR (Not Rated)
Staring: Judy Garland, Ray Bolger, John Hodiak, Angela Lansbury, Preston Foster
Director: George Sidney
Sometimes lively, sometimes pokey, this Technicolor MGM musical inspires mixed feelings in aficionados of the form--except on one point. No viewer will question why "On the Atchison, Topeka, & the Santa Fe" won the best song Oscar for 1946. This is a brilliant, inventive song given an epic staging. Director George Sidney pulls out all the stops for this wowser--even Marjorie Main sings, an eardrum-testing sound. The real-life Harvey Girls were waitresses imported to the far-flung Fred Harvey Hotels, civilizing oases along the railroad lines out west. The fictional Harvey Girls is set in Sandrock, where the traveling waitresses are joined by a sort of mail-order bri...

The Yearling [VHS]

  Rated: G (General Audience)
Staring: Gregory Peck, Jane Wyman, Claude Jarman Jr., Chill Wills, Clem Bevans
Child actor Claude Jarman Jr. won a Special Oscar for his lead performance as the boy hero of Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings' novel, which concerns a lad's love of a fawn in the post-Civil War era. Gregory Peck and Jane Wyman are memorable as his parents, their emotions divided in the aftermath of so much tragedy and their lives affected by the boy's passion for his yearling. Clarence Brown (National Velvet) directed this 1946 heartbreaker, which will not leave a dry eye in the room. A handsome, leisurely drama at more than two hours, shorter versions simply don't cut it. --Tom Keogh

The Westerner [VHS]

  Rated: NR (Not Rated)
Staring: Gary Cooper, Walter Brennan, Doris Davenport, Fred Stone, Forrest Tucker
Director: William Wyler
Having created an instant classic the previous year with their superlative production of Wuthering Heights, producer Samuel Goldwyn, director William Wyler, and cinematographer Gregg Toland reunited for this classic Western from 1940, which earned Walter Brennan his record-setting third Academy Award. Gary Cooper reportedly hesitated to take his role, knowing that Brennan would likely steal the show with his splendid portrayal of "hanging" lawman Judge Roy Bean, but Wyler persisted and Cooper signed on as the drifter who faces Judge Bean under the false accusation of stealing a horse. Cooper smooth-talks his way out of his hanging by claiming to be a close friend o...

The Alamo [Restored Original Director's Cut] [VHS]

  Rated: NR (Not Rated)
Staring: John Wayne, Richard Widmark, Laurence Harvey, Frankie Avalon, Patrick Wayne
Director: John Wayne
John Wayne drew on what he learned from John Ford, Howard Hawks, and practically everyone who directed him during his long career when he made his own directorial debut on this labor of love. The Alamo is a sprawling, unabashedly patriotic epic of the sacrifice made by 187 men defending the Alamo from Santa Ana's bigger and better equipped army. Wayne stars as Col. Davy Crockett, the straight-talking, fun-loving frontiersman turned senator, with Laurence Harvey as the stiff, by-the-book Col. William Travis and Ricahrd Widmark as the legendary Jim Bowie who bristles under Travis's military protocol. The mix of regular army soldiers, Texican irregulars, scouts, and c...

McLintock (1963) (Sp)

  Rated: NR (Not Rated)
Staring: John Wayne, Maureen O'Hara, Patrick Wayne, Stefanie Powers, Jack Kruschen
Director: Andrew V. McLaglen
John Wayne and Maureen O'Hara were born to star in "The Taming of the Shrew," and this is the closest they ever got. Wayne plays a cattle baron whose estranged wife (O'Hara) wants a divorce. The film is basically one long, funny brawl between them, ending with a mud pit melee and Wayne publicly spanking O'Hara, which doesn't look quite so politically correct anymore. This is no great shakes--director Andrew V. McLaglen is simply hosting a party here--but it's worth a few chuckles and the stars' broad performances. --Tom Keogh

The Rounders [VHS]

  Rated: NR (Not Rated)
Staring: Glenn Ford, Henry Fonda, Sue Ane Langdon, Hope Holiday, Chill Wills
Director: Burt Kennedy
Burt Kennedy wrote several of the finest Westerns ever for director Budd Boetticher in the late '50s--marvels of austere, subtle storytelling. Yet on his own, writer-director Kennedy tended to very broad comedy-Westerns. The Rounders, based on a novel by Max Evans, falls somewhere between Support Your Local Sheriff (high) and Dirty Dingus Magee (low). Glenn Ford and Henry Fonda play two bronc busters in the pickup-driving West who, by their own admission, "ain't exactly the smartest cowboys that ever lived." Somehow they always end up owing rancher Jim Ed Love (Chill Wills) one more year of indentured servitude. The year we observe is dominate...

Where the Boys Are [VHS]

  Rated: Unrated
Staring: Dolores Hart, George Hamilton, Yvette Mimieux, Jim Hutton, Barbara Nichols
Director: Henry Levin
The movie that put the Break into Spring, Where the Boys Are inspired thousands of college kids to seek sun, surf, and even s-e-x on the beaches of Florida. A bevy of co-eds (including foxy Yvette Mimieux and delightful Paula Prentiss, in her film debut) make for Fort Lauderdale, finding fun but also quite a bit of heavy-breathing drama. It's a little like a dressier, glossed-up version of the Problems with Today's Youth movies that were filling up the drive-ins of the era. The movie's actually pretty frank for 1960, although these days the lightweight stuff with Prentiss and Jim Hutton holds up best. There's also Connie Francis, who plays one of the college girls ...

Best Foot Forward [VHS]

  Rated: NR (Not Rated)
Staring: Lucille Ball, William Gaxton, Virginia Weidler, Tommy Dix, Nancy Walker
Director: Edward Buzzell
There's an endless supply of energy in this sweet-natured musical comedy, for the most part based closely on the 1941 Broadway musical choreographed by Gene Kelly and starring several of the performers (June Allyson, Nancy Walker, Gloria DeHaven, and future director Stanley Donen among them) found in this film. Lucille Ball (who was not part of the stage version) plays herself against an unlikely backdrop: a military academy full of frisky boys. Ball is the reluctant guest of a diminutive cadet, Bud Hooper (Tommy Dix), who wrote her a mash note and invitation to be his date at a school prom. Ball's publicity man (William Gaxton) seizes upon the situation as a perfect PR ...
