Most of the tape is devoted to the misadventures of that sterling hero, Dudley Do-Right of the RCMP. In one cartoon, Dudley, Snidely Whiplash, Nell, and Inspector Fenwick succumb to the show-biz bug and form a vaudeville act. Even funnier is Snidely confessing to having "a thing" about tying ladies to railroad tracks. He's ready to give himself up, but Nell defends him in a courtroom performance that Portia might envy. Rounding out the program is a visit to the first Mountie by Sherman and Mr. Peabody, Aesop and Son's retelling of "The Hound and the Wolf," and the Fractured Fairy Tale of "The Frog Prince." Rocky and Bullwinkle make only cameo appearances in this c...

Claude Rains may have meddled in things that Man must leave alone, but that doesn't mean Woman shouldn't get in on the act. Hence, The Invisible Woman, entry number two in Universal's series of '40s takes on the idea of making people too transparent for their own good. Kitty Carroll (Virginia Bruce) answers an ad in the paper to be an experimental subject for John Barrymore's dauntingly daffy Professor Gibbs, whose invisibility serum, if successful, promises to replenish the dwindling fortune of his benefactor, Dick Russell (John Howard)--if only he can get a human subject. Kitty's aim, however, is to wreak havoc on the draconian boss of her modeling job, the apt...

When a Great Dane puppy is raised with a litter of Dachshunds, it naturally thinks it's a Dachshund too--even when it grows to 10 times the size. Dean Jones and Suzanne Pleshette star as the hapless couple who took in the galumphing dog, which wreaks havoc on their house and home. The Ugly Dachshund is mostly a series of spectacular disasters (the doggy demolition of Jones's art studio will delight kids and reduce adults to nervous wrecks), but it's held together by the convincing domestic banter of Jones and Pleshette (who was quite a dish in 1965); the pair went on to star in a couple of other Disney live-action flicks, Bluebeard's Ghost and Th...

Hayley Mills is the two-fer star of this original version of the 1961 Disney comedy. The young actress plays twin sisters originally unaware of each others' existence and who later determine to bring their divorced parents together again by secretly trading places. Brian Keith and Maureen O'Hara bring some adult legitimacy to their roles as the wary parents, Joanna Barnes is a good sport as dad's new and despised girlfriend, and director David Swift makes the whole production sprightly, warm, and fun. --Tom Keogh

Whether you're indulging in nostalgia for the cartoons of your youth or introducing your kids to Rocky & Bullwinkle for the first time, Volume 1 of the famous moose and squirrel's animated adventures is a sublime example of irreverent family entertainment. (It's been rated "Fun-E: Viewer Discretion Unnecessary.") The classic creations of Jay Ward Productions, Rocky & Bullwinkle packed more punch lines into a one-hour show than most cartoons manage in seven minutes, and this video leaps from the starting gate with a typically loony escapade. The snidely villains Boris and Natasha are scheming to retrieve "the Treasure of Monte Zoom" from the bottom of Lake Sal-de-Bain by p...
