A little drunk on its own arcane exotica as a gambling movie, "Rounders" is a film that takes us inside a world of high-stakes card players but falls short on such essentials as character development, relationships, that sort of thing. Still, it is a real curiosity, written by a couple of guys (David Levien and Brian Koppelman) who appear to know something about the dark underbelly of card hustling for fun and profit. Matt Damon stars as a reluctant law student who can't put aside his subterranean career of playing poker and blackjack for big money. After he loses his post-grad nest egg to a weird Russian kingpin (John Malkovich)--and also loses his disgusted girlfriend (...

Dennis Leary snarls as naturally as most actors smile. Leary's trademark ferocity and fearlessness drive Rescue Me, a series about a team of firemen struggling with their wives and lovers in post-9/11 New York City. Tommy Gavin (Leary, No Cure for Cancer, The Ref) is the guy everyone confides in, the heart of the firehouse--but he's also an active alcoholic who rages about his wife Janet (Andrea Roth) leaving him, a man guilt-ridden and literally haunted by all the people he blames himself for failing to save. Surrounding him are a crew of vivid characters, played by a little-known but outstanding cast: Handsome lothario Franco Rivera (Daniel Sunjat...

Is firefighter and "heroic S.O.B." Tommy Gavin (Denis Leary) becoming, as one character so delicately puts it, "pussified?" As the fourth season begins, Tommy is listening to Dr. Laura and watching Oprah. He awkwardly and clumsily avoids the aggressive crazy-hot volunteer woman firefighter (Jennifer Esposito) who saved his life in the beach-house fire of which he has no memory; an act that has left him, shall we say, with a limp hose. In time, he will proclaim to be "back to the old me," but this season, he engages in behavior that would give even the old Tommy pause, and puts audience empathy for this deeply flawed character to the supreme test. In one of this season's m...
