Dumbo (Big Top Edition)

  Rated: G (General Audience)
Staring: Edward Brophy, Sterling Holloway, Verna Felton, Cliff Edwards, Herman Bing
A Disney "classic" that actually is a classic, Dumbo should be part of your video collection whether or not you have children. The storytelling was never as lean as in Dumbo, the songs rarely as haunting (or just plain weird), the characters rarely so well defined. The film pits the "cold, cruel, heartless" world that can't accept abnormality against a plucky, and mute, hero. Jumbo Jr. (Dumbo is a mean-spirited nickname) is ostracized from the circus pack shortly after his delivery by the stork because of his big ears. His mother sticks up for him and is shackled. He's jeered by children (an insightful scene has one boy poking fun at Dumbo's ears, even thoug...

Walt Disney Treasures - Mickey Mouse in Living Color, Volume Two

  Rated: G (General Audience)
Staring: Wayne Allwine, Russi Taylor, Kelsey Grammer, Jim Cummings, Bill Farmer
Director: Chris Bailey, Bill Roberts, Riley Thomson
By 1939, when the earliest films in this collection were made, Mickey Mouse was the most famous cartoon character in the world. The unsuccessful hunter in "The Pointer" (1939) and the irrepressible magician in "The Sorcerer's Apprentice" (1940) rank among his finest performances. In both films, he sparkles with vitality. But as Mickey grew more popular, more restrictions were placed on what he could do, and the character grew dull. Those restrictions become obvious when the viewer compares these films with the shorts on Walt Disney Treasures: Mickey Mouse in Living Color. In "Mickey's Birthday Party" (1942), he clowns and stumbles through a comic dance routine, bu...

Walt Disney Treasures - The Complete Goofy

  Rated: G (General Audience)
Staring: John McLeish, Hannes Schroll, Pinto Colvig, Kevin Corcoran, John Dehner
Director: Clyde Geronimi, Dick Huemer, Jack Hannah, Jack Kinney, Wolfgang Reitherman
In Stand By Me (1986), one of the boys asks, "If Mickey is a mouse and Donald is a duck, what's Goofy?" The answer: he's a dog. Originally named Dippy Dawg, the Goof, as the animators called him, made his debut as an obnoxious hayseed in "Mickey's Revue" (1932). This generous collection includes 46 of the 48 shorts that starred Goofy between 1939 and 1961 (but none of the great Mickey-Donald-Goofy films from the mid-'30s). The "How to Ride a Horse" sequence in The Reluctant Dragon (1941) set the pattern for many of these cartoons. An elegant narrator (artist John Ployardt) explains a sport that Goofy attempts to demonstrate. The character that animat...

Looney Tunes: Golden Collection, Vol. 6

  Rated: NR (Not Rated)
Staring: Mel Blanc, Arthur Q. Bryan, Bea Benaderet, Stan Freberg, John T. Smith
Director: Alex Lovy, Chuck Jones, Friz Freleng, Hugh Harman, Jack King
Fifteen cartoons dating from World War II give Volume 6 of the Looney Tunes Golden Collection more focus than previous sets. Many of the 1940's cartoons remain very funny. Bugs Bunny dresses up as Brunnhilda and rides in to the strains of "Tannhauser" in "Herr Meets Hare" (1945), a gag Chuck Jones re-used to greater effect in "What's Opera, Doc" a dozen years later. In "Russian Rhapsody" (1940) some of the gremlins who sabotage Hitler's bomber are caricatures of the Warner Bros. artists. Chuck Jones appears as a chunky, pinkish-tan homunculus swinging a mallet; Friz Freleng is a little green man with a saw-like nose. Younger viewers may find the referenc...

The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad (Disney Gold Classic Collection)

  Rated: G (General Audience)
Staring: Bing Crosby, Basil Rathbone, Eric Blore, Pat O'Malley, John McLeish
Director: Clyde Geronimi, Jack Kinney, James Algar
This 1949 Disney feature has never been available on video in its original form until now. The 68-minute film contains two shorts: The Wind in the Willows and The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. The former is a lively version of Kenneth Grahame's book of animal adventures, including Mr. Toad, a rambunctious sort with a passion for motorcars. Basil Rathbone narrates the story. Sleepy Hollow is the Washington Irving story of a stuffy schoolmaster and his ability to win the love of the fair Katrina from the brutish Brom Van Brunt. Many fans will see a resemblance to Disney's masterpiece created some 40 years later, Beauty and the Beast, in style and sto...

Walt Disney Treasures - On the Front Lines

  Rated: G (General Audience)
Staring: Alexander de Seversky, Art Baker, Billy Mitchell, Clarence Nash, Adolf Hitler
Director: Ben Sharpsteen, Bill Justice, Bill Roberts, Clyde Geronimi, Ford Beebe
World War II transformed the Disney Studio. Although nearly one-third of the artists had been drafted, production quintupled, up to 95% of it for military and government uses. Some of the films included in On the Front Lines have not been seen since their initial release; others were never shown to the general public. Anticipating the importance of animated training films, Disney produced the studio's first educational film, "Four Methods of Flush Riveting" (1941), using limited animation to train riveters at Lockheed. Decades later, "Four Methods" and the excerpts from military training films remain models of how to present information clearly and concisely.
