Martin Clunes is one of the unlikeliest, and most borderline likable, heroes to grace the small screen. And for Dirty Tricks, that's a very good thing. Dirty Tricks, a BBC two-episode murder mystery/bedroom farce, is based on a novel by Michael Dibdin. And much of Dibdin's intricate plotting and splendid dialogue makes it into the screenplay intact--resulting in a very witty, if wince-inducing, comedy. Dirty Tricks is not for the squeamish, nor for young audiences, as the sexual high jinks are depicted very explicitly. And due to a series of unfortunate events, dead bodies tend to pile up around our hero, Edward (Clunes). So the peculiarly British ...

In an ocean of police shows competing for screen space, New Tricks has one heck of a trump card. For while its plotlines aren’t particularly radical, and while the pace is perhaps gentler than you may expect, its cast greedily devour the material and lift a good show into something really quite special. The premise behind New Tricks is that three retired detectives are called in to work as a mismatched team of sorts to solve crimes. So far, so routine. But those three detectives are played by Dennis Waterman, James Bolam and Alun Armstrong, a trio who can not only act, but are also capable of maximising the comedy potential on offer. Then...

In Mike Barker's version of British history, Thomas Fairfax (Mission Impossible II's Dougray Scott) represents reason, while Oliver Cromwell (Tim Roth, taking on a role previously assumed by Richard Harris) embodies reform. As the lieutenant-general, who makes up in conviction what he lacks in charisma, declares, "Tom is our emblem. We are brutes without him." He could easily be referring to himself, since Cromwell would turn out to be one of England's more brutal reformers. Barker picks up their story in 1645 during the height of civil war. At the time, King Charles I (Rupert Everett, in fine fettle despite a few unfortunate ensembles) holds a tenuous grasp on the...

"This is a diary of hate," pounds out novelist Maurice Bendrix (Ralph Fiennes) on his typewriter as he recounts the lost love of his life in this spiritual memoir (based on Graham Greene's novel) with a startling twist. It's London 1946, and Maurice runs into his achingly dull school friend Henry (Stephen Rea with a perpetually gloomy hangdog expression). Their meeting is brittle, all small talk and chilly, mannered civility beautifully captured by director-screenwriter Neil Jordan (The Crying Game), and it only barely thaws when Henry suggests that his wife Sarah (the luminous Julianne Moore) may be having an affair. Maurice's mind reels back to his passionate aff...
