This absolutely charming, wholly engaging romantic comedy is the hidden gem of the four collaborations of Katharine Hepburn and Cary Grant. Most everyone's seen The Philadelphia Story, but few know of this unorthodox, hilarious comedy of life among the rich and privileged, though both were Broadway hits by playwright Philip Barry. Grant plays the happy-go-lucky Johnny Case, a self-made man with a dream in his heart of making just enough money to retire on and then traveling around the world. Johnny proposes to the lovely Julia (Doris Nolan) in Lake Placid, but it isn't until he comes to pay her a visit in New York that he discovers she's the daughter of a wealthy i...

Even if it were only to present a batch of Fox musicals in ultra-spiffy versions, this five-film box set would be a valuable slice of film history. The hook here, however, is a glimpse at the short-lived but delirious stardom of Carmen Miranda, that fruitbowl-wearing (and genuinely talented) purveyor of Brazilian samba and silliness. Miranda scores points in all the films here, especially in that Citizen Kane of absurdity, The Gang's All Here (1943), which arrives in this set in a version improved over the one that was included in the first Alice Faye Collection. The plot is best ignored, but director Busy Berkeley's mad inventiveness and the sh...

Whether you're indulging in nostalgia for the cartoons of your youth or introducing your kids to Rocky & Bullwinkle for the first time, Volume 1 of the famous moose and squirrel's animated adventures is a sublime example of irreverent family entertainment. (It's been rated "Fun-E: Viewer Discretion Unnecessary.") The classic creations of Jay Ward Productions, Rocky & Bullwinkle packed more punch lines into a one-hour show than most cartoons manage in seven minutes, and this video leaps from the starting gate with a typically loony escapade. The snidely villains Boris and Natasha are scheming to retrieve "the Treasure of Monte Zoom" from the bottom of Lake Sal-de-Bain by p...

Most of the tape is devoted to the misadventures of that sterling hero, Dudley Do-Right of the RCMP. In one cartoon, Dudley, Snidely Whiplash, Nell, and Inspector Fenwick succumb to the show-biz bug and form a vaudeville act. Even funnier is Snidely confessing to having "a thing" about tying ladies to railroad tracks. He's ready to give himself up, but Nell defends him in a courtroom performance that Portia might envy. Rounding out the program is a visit to the first Mountie by Sherman and Mr. Peabody, Aesop and Son's retelling of "The Hound and the Wolf," and the Fractured Fairy Tale of "The Frog Prince." Rocky and Bullwinkle make only cameo appearances in this c...
