Brothers & Sisters: The Complete Fourth Season

  Rated: NR (Not Rated)
Staring: Dave Annable, Balthazar Getty, Ron Rifkin, Sally Fields, Patricia Wettig
The Walker family of Brothers and Sisters grows more complex with every season--a delight for viewers who get plenty of comedy along with a crisply written dramatic series. The ensemble cast is always top-notch across the board, but this season belongs to Calista Flockhart as Kitty, who faces serious health and personal challenges with believable vulnerability alternating with determination. This season also sees a delicious--and younger--love interest for Nora (Sally Field), and a new French beau for Sarah (Rachel Griffiths). As the Walker family tries to rally around Kitty and her shocking news, however, their messy lives tend to spiral out of tidy plot lines. Th...

Judge Dredd

  Rated: R (Restricted)
Staring: Sylvester Stallone, Diane Lane, Armand Assante, Rob Schneider, Jürgen Prochnow
Judge Dredd is one of those movies that doesn't have a brain of its own, so it can only rip off a lot of ingredients from other, better movies. It's a mishmash of Blade Runner, Total Recall, and The Road Warrior, with a dash of Star Wars tossed in for good measure. As if that weren't enough, it's got Sylvester Stallone, who seems to be the only one in the movie who's in on the game and knows it's all a sci-fi scam. Like The Fifth Element a few years later, Judge Dredd depicts a futuristic megalopolis packed with crowded vertical overgrowth and rampant commerce, where anarchy reigns supreme. Violent "block wars" are fought b...

Young Guns II (Keepcase)

  Rated: PG-13 (Parental Guidance Suggested)
Staring: Emilio Estevez, Kiefer Sutherland, Lou Diamond Phillips, Christian Slater, William Petersen
Director: Geoff Murphy
This time around, the Brat Packers (Emilio Estevez, Christian Slater, Lou Diamond Phillips, Kiefer Sutherland) are on the run from the law and making a break for the border. Sutherland is yanked from his school-teaching job back East and extradited for trial, until he's liberated by the other members of the gang. There's a memorable scrap between Phillips and Slater, and a couple of pretty decent firefights, but all in all this is rather forgettable fare. It taps into the futility and camaraderie of classics like The Wild Bunch and Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, but Sam Peckinpah or George Roy Hill it ain't. Jon Bon Jovi adds to the Rock-Stars-in-the-Ol...

Brothers & Sisters: The Complete Fifth Season

  Rated: PG (Parental Guidance Suggested)
Staring: Sally Fields, Calista Flockhart, Dave Annable, Balthazar Getty
The deep connections in the Walker family of Brothers and Sisters come to a fulfilling, emotional end in this well-written fifth and final season of the show. Led by Walker matriarch Sally Field in one of her best roles ever, the cast of Brothers and Sisters meshes and clashes, like a real family, only perhaps a bit wittier. This season the viewer notices the absence of Rob Lowe (Senator McCallister), but his ex, Kitty Walker (Calista Flockhart), has a new, much younger love in the quirky Seth (Ryan Devlin). The marriage of brother Kevin (Matthew Rhys) and Scotty (Luke Macfarlane) is blossoming and includes some young new members. Even Uncle Saul (Ron Rifkin...

Lord of the Flies

  Rated: R (Restricted)
Staring: Balthazar Getty, Chris Furrh, Danuel Pipoly, James Badge Dale, Andrew Taft (II)
Harry Hook's adaptation is not as faithful to the William Golding novel as you'd wish (they excised the Lord of the Flies dialogue with Simon!) and because of it, the movie is less allegorical and less resonant. A group of young men from a military academy are stranded on an island. The group quickly becomes fractious with a passive section led by Ralph, trying to get rescued, and a hunter faction, led by Jack, trying to procure meat and "have fun." Peter Brook's 1963 filming seemed to get closer to the Darwinist sense of this cultural disintegration. Here, the hunter faction seems more like Peter Pan's Lost Boys than the bloodthirsty murderers they are. The perfor...

Ladder 49 [Blu-ray]

  Rated: PG-13 (Parental Guidance Suggested)
Staring: Joaquin Phoenix, John Travolta, Jacinda Barrett, Robert Patrick, Morris Chestnut
Director: Jay Russell
In paying simple tribute to firefighters, Ladder 49 gets to the heart of those who risk their lives for a living. Director Jay Russell brought similar sincerity to his memorable family favorite My Dog Skip, and despite the banalities of an ultra-conventional screenplay by Lewis Colick, Ladder 49 generates so much goodwill toward its Baltimore firemen that you may find yourself unexpectedly overcome with emotional appreciation for guys like Jack (Joaquin Phoenix), a firefighter whose career, courtship, marriage, and fatherhood are viewed in flashback as he struggles to survive in the present-day framing scenes, cut off from his fellow firemen in the fi...
